Some good stuff for the new year

1.

Swiss cheese toasty: a toasted slice of whole wheat, dijon mustard, walnuts and swiss cheese. Put it under the broiler so the cheese melts on top of everything.

A little toasty makes me an exponentially happier person in the mornings.

2.

This excerpt from Mike Daisey’s show The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs.

3.

Keeping up with my Google Reader for the first time in months because of these tumblers/blogs:

Old Love

L.A. in Bloom

Southern Foodways Alliance

4.

Resolutions, which include cooking more and perhaps picking up that old, abandoned blog, cooking con booze.

At Cooking con Booze

Also

D.M’s piece on Slate.

I listen to music while I cook, but I can no longer listen to it while I read.

I like to walk to and from work with my iPod playing, but I hate using it on public transportation.

What about you?

 hmmm?

That’s all I’ll be eating after a very decadent trip to L.A.

I believe I drank over 100 ounces of beer.

Is this a good time to announce my new blog?

It has to do with two of the subjects mentioned above.

There’s nothing there yet, so I’ll make you wait a little longer.

This here shiz is the sweet potato ice cream I made over the weekend. I also made pecan crumble cookies and last night I combined the two for an explosion of sweet-ass southern flavor.

Here is the receipt, but you have to have an ice cream machine. Next time I will use less coconut milk and more rum.

2 sweet potatoes cooked in the oven, mixed and mashed up with nutmeg and ginger.  Heat 1 and 1/2 c. coconut milk, 1 and 1/2 c. heavy cream, 2 eggs, 1/2 c. brown sugar over medium heat till it gets all custardy like.  Combine with sweet potatoes. Add some dark rum and mix together and chill in the fridge for an hour our so.  Pour in the ice cream machine and let it do its business. Freeze overnight.

That’s right, I subscribe to Garden and Gun. Makes me feel all warm and toasty inside. Like a drunk.

For one more hour this is my office on a lounge chair by the pool in Palm Springs.  Then I am officially off the clock and on the hunt for the perfect sweet potato recipe for tomorrow’s feast.  I want those potatoes to be savory, but I also want to add bourbon.  Will let you know how it all turns out.

Happy Turkey Day y’all!  Eat your hearts out tomorrow.
