Did I tell you all about Game of Thrones yet?

It is way good – technically a fantasy novel. Don’t let that turn you off!

Besides being a total pleasure to read, there’s this whole group of fantasy novel fans out there–people on your bus, waitresses at your hip german restaurant, your bartender,  your doctor–they love to talk about these books, to total strangers! It’s what you always hope will happen with the books you love but never does. So many people stopped me to talk about their favorite Game of Thrones characters, what they think will happen in the next installment, other fantasy books they like. There’s this instant nerd-bond when they spy you reading George R.R. Martin. It’s fantastic!

The HBO miniseries airs in April. Read the book first.

This here shiz is the sweet potato ice cream I made over the weekend. I also made pecan crumble cookies and last night I combined the two for an explosion of sweet-ass southern flavor.

Here is the receipt, but you have to have an ice cream machine. Next time I will use less coconut milk and more rum.

2 sweet potatoes cooked in the oven, mixed and mashed up with nutmeg and ginger.  Heat 1 and 1/2 c. coconut milk, 1 and 1/2 c. heavy cream, 2 eggs, 1/2 c. brown sugar over medium heat till it gets all custardy like.  Combine with sweet potatoes. Add some dark rum and mix together and chill in the fridge for an hour our so.  Pour in the ice cream machine and let it do its business. Freeze overnight.

That’s right, I subscribe to Garden and Gun. Makes me feel all warm and toasty inside. Like a drunk.

Stanley Fish’s favorite sentences:

“Now he had not run far from his own door, but his wife and children perceiving it, began crying after him to return, but the man put his fingers in his ears, and ran on, crying, Life! Life! eternal life.”

– John Bunyan, Pilgrim’s Progress

“Last week I saw a woman flayed, and you will hardly believe how  much it altered her appearance for the worse.”

– Jonathan Swift, A Tale of  a Tub

“To such a tremulous wisp constantly re-forming itself on the stream, to a single sharp impression, with a sense in it, a relic more or less fleeting, of such moments gone by, what is real in our lives fines itself down.”

– Walter Pater, The Renaissance

“And I shall go on talking in a low voice while the sea sounds in the distance and overhead the great black flood of wind polishes the bright stars.”

-Ford Madox Ford, The Good Soldier

“When I first began writing I felt that writing should go on I still do feel that it should go on but when I first began writing I was completely possessed by the necessity that writing should go on and if writing should go on what had commas and semi-colons to do with it what had commas to do with it what had periods to do with it what had small letters and capitals to do with writing going on which was at the time the most profound need I had in connection with writing.”

– Gertrude Stein, Lectures in America

Plus one from me:

“One summer afternoon, Mrs Oedipa Maas came home from a Tupperware party whose hostess had put perhaps too much kirsch in the fondue to find that she, Oedipa, had been named executor, or she supposed executrix, of the estate of one Pierce Inverarity, a California real estate mogul who had once lost two million dollars in his spare time but still had assets numerous and tangled enough to make the job of sorting it out more than honorary.”

– Thomas Pynchon, The Crying of Lot 49

“It seems like the big distinction between good art and so-so art lies somewhere in the art’s heart’s purpose, the agenda of the consciousness behind the text.  It’s got something to do with love.  With having the discipline to talk out of the part of yourself that can love instead of the part that just wants to be loved.”

David Foster Wallace

We move it like Bernie.

As in Weekend at Bernies. This dance craze is sweeping Russian Hill apartments.
