I found this picture of Anna Magnani, which I think I will tape onto my bathroom mirror. Full-throated, open-mouth laughs like this should be a daily goal.

A Borges and a Patti Smith book cover from artist Rebekah Miles.
I love that she wraps the actual books with these.
Check out more on her blog.

Just Kids by Patti Smith
I’ve read a couple slim, spare books by artists recently (this + The Hare with Amber Eyes) and they have both been fantastic.
Looking for more. Any recommendations?

The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer
Siddhartha Mukherjee
People give you weird looks when you tell them you’re reading a book all about cancer. Not sure it that’s because it sounds boring or depressing or both. Anyway, it’s neither.

Jonathan Franzen
One of those 600 pagers you devour in a couple of days. It’s such a pleasure to stay up till 3am finishing a novel. Even if you don’t think it’s the novel of the century and were a little disappointed with the ending.

Did I tell you all about Game of Thrones yet?
It is way good – technically a fantasy novel. Don’t let that turn you off!
Besides being a total pleasure to read, there’s this whole group of fantasy novel fans out there–people on your bus, waitresses at your hip german restaurant, your bartender, your doctor–they love to talk about these books, to total strangers! It’s what you always hope will happen with the books you love but never does. So many people stopped me to talk about their favorite Game of Thrones characters, what they think will happen in the next installment, other fantasy books they like. There’s this instant nerd-bond when they spy you reading George R.R. Martin. It’s fantastic!
The HBO miniseries airs in April. Read the book first.

If you haven’t read it yet, you should. It is very good.
By the way – these pictures will get better soon. I promise. I have photoshop now and a nice new camera. Once I teach myself how to use both things around here will be much spiffier.
